Empower Federal Credit Union Reduces Turnover with Video Interviews

Empower Federal Credit Union is a full-service financial institution that provides savings, loan, and transaction services to members in Central New York, and in eight counties in New York State. In an effort to streamline their screening process and speed up their time to hire, Empower Federal’s hiring team began exploring tech-forward hiring solutions. Additionally, they needed to gain better candidate insight earlier in the process to make more informed hiring decisions and reduce turnover. A more fair and consistent approach

Prior to using Spark Hire, Empower Federal Credit Union Recruiter, Jessica Procopio, says her team would review applications and select a handful of candidates to phone screen. “This involved a great deal of phone tag as you can imagine. From there, [we] would determine who to schedule for in-person interviews,” says Procopio. Tired of losing valuable time in their day and in need of a more consistent and fair way to review candidates, Procopio says her team was ready for a change. 

This was the first time the team would be using video interviewing as part of their hiring strategy. The new tech was a quick sell for the recruiters after realizing the benefits of having a more consistent screening process in place for potential candidates. Not to mention, the amount of time it saved. Spark Hire’s one-way video interviews eventually replaced their phone screens entirely. 

“Spark Hire has allowed us to reach more candidates and speed up our hiring process,” explains Procopio, adding, “I hire for 29 locations, so it allows me the opportunity to share interviews with various managers across the state, saving time for both candidates and the hiring team.” With the addition of Spark Hire, the hiring team eliminated phone tag, improved collaboration with hiring managers, and extended their candidate reach.

The hiring team found Spark Hire’s interface intuitive and user-friendly. “When we started researching the platform for ourselves we loved the amount of customization as well as the number of resources available to our hiring managers and candidates,” says Procopio, adding, “We were excited about the prospect of enhancing our hiring process.”

Between the convenience and personalization, applicants were quick to buy-in to the new tech. “Overall, our candidates love it too! They are able to complete their interviews on their own time and showcase their personalities and skill sets better than a phone screen ever could,” explains Procopio. The insight provided by one-way video interviews has also led to more confident hiring decisions.
